GARDS News Item
GARDS
receives $15,000 from State Govt.
10/02/04
WorkCover Minsiter Rob Hulls presented a cheque at the GARDS
headquatrers in Newborough on Thursday 11th of March, 2004. He made mention
that this money would help Gippsland families and carers dealing with the impact
of asbestos related diseases and deaths.
Mr Hulls also commented that Australia has one of the highest rates of asbestos related disease in the world and that the volunteers at GARDS can give a practical perspective to the effects of asbestosis and how to manage aspects of daily life. He also said that talking to someone who understands what you and your family are going through can make a huge difference.
Also at the presentation, WorkSafe Victoria Executive Director, John Merritt, said that the national commitment to phase out the use of asbestos would reduce worker exposure. However, he added that the widespread use of asbestos in Victoria in the 1960s, '70s and '80s, particularly in building and construction, meant that workers involved in asbestos removal, renovation or maintenance work that disturbs existing in-itu asbestos would remain at risk. "Groups such as GARDS play an important advocacy role in ensuring that asbestos related issues are kept in the local public eye," Mr Merritt said.
