Fundraising for New Memorial Sculpture to honour lives lost to Asbestos

The Latrobe Valley has been profoundly affected by asbestos-related illnesses for decades. Thousands of people have lost their lives due to exposure at local power stations, and the impact has extended beyond workers to families and the wider community.

Now, the ACV/GARDS Memorial Sculpture project is bringing a lasting tribute to those affected. Designed to depict a power worker with his young daughter, the sculpture recognises that the consequences of asbestos-related disease touch entire families. Its historically informed design captures the era from the 1920s to the 1980s, ensuring a deeply relatable and respectful memorial.

Proposed for the Moe Botanical Gardens, this contemporary sculpture will offer a dedicated and accessible place for community reflection and remembrance.

The project is currently seeking support from the community to make this memorial a reality. Every contribution helps honour the thousands of lives affected and ensures that their stories and sacrifices are not forgotten.
