National Asbestos Awareness Week 21st Nov – 27th Nov 2022

November 21, 2022 By Vicki Hamilton

National Asbestos Awareness Week starts today in Australia – Mon 21st – 27th November

It’s vital that you understand the invisible dangers of asbestos.

Breathing in asbestos fibers can lead to diseases such as asbestosis,

lung cancer and mesothelioma. These diseases can take decades to

develop and have no known cure. They can cause debilitating illness

and premature death.

As a young apprentice fitter and machinist, Brian Healy was exposed

unsafely to asbestos in the workplace, leading to his diagnosis of

mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.

“Being young, you did what the boss told you to do…. and you just did

your job. But the only one who’s going to suffer later on down the track

will be you if you don’t look after yourself.”

Watch Brian’s story below

Commonwealth takes first steps towards new compensation fund for asbestos victims

April 22, 2021 By Wendy McEwan

When we think of the people who could suffer from exposure to asbestos, we might imagine tradespeople and home renovators. But in Canberra, one man has developed mesothelioma simply because of where he lived – in a house that had been treated with a dangerous form of loose-fill asbestos known as Mr Fluffy.

Unlike the victims of James Hardie products, there’s been no way for Mr Fluffy victims to claim compensation. But that might be about to change.

Watch this report from the 7.30 Report on the ABC.
