On the 26th April 2019 ACV/GARDS and GTLC conducted their International Workers Memorial Day event in the Centenary Rose Garden Morwell Victoria, Australia – Workers Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for workers who have been killed and injured on the job. It is observed around the world by surviving family members, friends, co-workers, and health and safety activists in workplaces and communities. Today we had inspirational speakers – Paul Fowler – Director – Enforcement Group, WorkSafe Victoria – Darren Van Heurck – Workplace Accident Survivor – Steve Dodd – Secretary GTLC & Union organiser, AMWU – wonderful singers – Susan Parrish & Patrick Wakefield from – In Harmony & The Yallourn Madrigal Singers (Choir) – awesome bagpiper – Dick Henry – Moving ecumenical service conducted by Reverend Marilyn – great crowd of family and friends – thank you for making today a wonderful and truly magical event for those attending – everyone felt love and compassion and a sense of community and that is what it is all about – people supporting people!!! We honoured fallen workers and recommitted ourselves to the struggle for safe and healthy work places in Latrobe Valley – Victoria and Australia wide. A memorable day for all.

29th January – ACV/GARDS reps – Vicki, Dorothy, Tanya and Ethan attended the announcement of the successful grant recipients made by the Latrobe Valley Authority, one of which was ACV/GARDS – the grant was for a fit out of our new office we are moving to in the next fortnight. We were very excited to receive the grant and proud to be with the other recipients to celebrate the grants for our community organisations. We thank the Latrobe Valley Authority for being supportive of our organisation at time when it really counts.

Federation Training Newborough Asbestos Aware 2018

July 22, 2018 By Vicki Hamilton

Recently ACV/GARDS crew did an asbestos awareness session to 160 apprentices at Federation Training Newborough – Boiler makers, mechanics, civil engineering, painting & decorating, carpentry etc. Great session – good questions from the apprentices and their trade teachers  – the apprentices left the room with a better understanding of where asbestos can be found in their work places and in their home environment. They now know asbestos is not a thing of the past but something they will have to deal with for the rest of their lives and make sure that they are cautious with what ever task they undertake – that they take every precaution to not allow themselves to be exposed to asbestos.  Thanks goes to their trades teachers for also being a part of the session and contributing their knowledge and experience to the session. Big thank you to Davin for organising the session.

Lunch at Darnum for Support Group

July 22, 2018 By Vicki Hamilton

At the end of June our support group members had a day out and lunched together at the Darnum pub. We then were kindly invited back to one our members houses, Jenny, in Warragul for afternoon tea, where she had prepared for us scones jam and cream. It was a wonderful day for our members who enjoyed themselves immensely – thank you to all those who came and made the day a great success.

International Women’s Day Event 2018

March 8, 2018 By Vicki Hamilton

International Women’s Day 8/3/2018 – The ACV/GARDS girls – Dorothy and Vicki attended a wonderful lunch/get together at Silks Restaurant in Moe. The International Women’s Group Latrobe Valley hosted the event and it was well attended. We met many ladies we already knew and made new friendships as well. It was good see a handful of men turn up today to celebrate with us. Councillor Sharon Gibson attended, she was their guest speaker. Councillor Gibson asked a few of the women at the lunch to stand up and give a short talk on what they do in the community and how they were making a difference. Soula, the President of the International Women’s Group Latrobe Valley gave a short talk on how far women had come in the last 200 years. We learnt about some inspiring women who have done outstanding deeds. We need to keep up the standard set by our sisters from the past. What a great legacy they have left and the bar has been set high. Below is a pic of those who attended – it was lovely to spend time with a great bunch of people and celebrate the achievements of some very inspirational women.
