Asbestos Awareness Morning Tea 2016

November 23, 2016 By Vicki Hamilton

A special morning tea was held at the ACV/GARDS office on the 22nd November, where members and the general public were invited to come along and learn so much more about asbestos in the community. On hand to stimulate conversation were samples containing asbestos such as necklaces, earrings, crayons, children’s science kits, building materials such as brick cladding, asbestos fibre samples, sealant, brakes, pot stands, gaskets and so much more. In attendance were hygienists, asbestos litigation lawyers and local council employees for the general public to ask those questions they have always wanted to know and never got around to asking.

All who attended enjoyed the chat and banter along with the scones jam and cream – tea and coffee. It was a very enjoyable morning with much information sharing. All who attended said that the morning had been insightful and enjoyable. Thank you to all who came along and made the morning such a success. Below are some of those who attended.

Darnum Musical Village Visit

June 29, 2016 By Vicki Hamilton

On the 28th June 2016 some of the ACV/GARDS support group members went on an excursion by chartered bus to Darnum Musical Village – what a wonderful day & terrific experience. Our members enjoyed a very interesting tour of all the musical instruments collected by Albert Fox on his travels over the years. Some of the musical instruments dated back nearly 300 years – what a collection. It was even more impressive to know they were still in working order and hearing them played was just fantastic. I wonder if our ipods will still be working in 300 years? To top off this great day out we were treated to a lovely home made lunch and musical interlude by the staff at the village – just a magnificent day enjoyed by all.

28th April, 2016 saw the Asbestos Council of Victoria/GARDS and Gippsland Trades and Labour Council “International Workers Memorial Day” event take place in the Centenary Rose Garden, Morwell. The day was perfect and the speakers were inspirational. We were so lucky to have 3 wonderful speakers who enlightened the crowd to what it means to have good OH&S in work places.
Acting Senior Sergeant Ben McWilliam from Victoria Police spoke about his personal illness and the incident of suicide, accompanied with shift work and many other demands within the work force and the pressures of a highly charged work environment. It was a truly thought provoking talk.
Allan Buhagiar work place accident representative spoke of his accident at work 10 years ago where his hand was severed in a workplace accident, at the same time Allan lost a co-worker who
died in the accident. A very tragic story. Allan spoke about his slow recovery, both mental and physical and the 15 operations that surgeons performed to try to save his hand.
Steve Dodd, Secretary Gippsland Trades & Labour Council spoke of the need for good OH&S in all workplaces and how important it is to make sure all workplaces are safe places.
Paddy O’Dowd entertained the crowd with songs and tin whistle a truly wonderful performance.
Minister Russell Jones gave a moving ecumenical service and spoke of his personal family story of his father and asbestos disease.
The bagpipes could be heard across Morwell as Bill Dunbar piped the event in and played while the wreaths were being laid – he also piped the ceremony to its conclusion. Bill traveled from Lakes Entrance to be with us – as he does twice a year for our events. It was a truly wonderful ceremony with a terrific crowd.

Asbestos Awareness Day 2015

December 15, 2015 By Vicki Hamilton

Our annual Asbestos Awareness Day event was well attended on Friday 27th November at 11am in the Centenary Rose Garden, Morwell.

Great speakers, amongst them were:

  • Peter Tighe, CEO – Asbestos Safety & Eradication Agency
  • George Davis – living with mesothelioma
  • Steve Dodd, Secretary – Gippsland Trades & Labour Council

Minister David Howie performed our Ecumenical service and we had terrific performances by the Coal Valley Male Chorus, Newborough Primary School Choir, Paddy O’Dowd singer/musician and our ACV/GARDS bagpiper Bill Dunbar.

Thank you to all our families who came along and all the workers who could take time off to come – it meant a lot to our families that you were there supporting them.

Thank you to the Gippsland Trades & Labour Council for the wonderful community BBQ that they cooked and to Maurice Blackburn for funding the meat for that BBQ. It is all of the community who make this event a success.

Please visit our Facebook page to see some of the photos taken on the day. A truly memorable event for all who attended.
