Wednesday 6th July 2016 the ACV/GARDS team travelled to Chisholm TAFE at Berwick to deliver an asbestos awareness session to some very enthusiastic apprentice plumbers and their trade teachers. It was a very productive morning session and the apprentices had many questions to ask. The ACV/GARDS team want to thank all the apprentices and the teaching staff for jumping in and making the session such a success. It was really great to meet another bunch of apprentices from Chisholm who now have a greater knowledge of asbestos than they did before they entered the room. Go well and stay safe!
Asbestos Awareness session Chisholm TAFE Berwick
Today we traveled to Chisholm TAFE at Berwick to conduct an asbestos awareness session with 40+ apprentice Plumbers & Electricians – it was a great session and the apprentices asked terrific questions. Well done to you all – it was such a pleasure to chat with you about everything asbestos! Thanks to Chisholm TAFE and students for making myself and the team welcome. It was also great to have Liam O’Dwyer along – always good to see him : ) – A big thank you to the Plumbing Dept at Chisholm – and lecturer Trevor Watson, for all your help and support, it is always good to catch up. We always look forward to meeting new apprentices – the enthusiasm in the group was just terrific today. We hope they will all go away with a greater understanding of the dangers of asbestos and where it lurks in their work places and in their homes, that way they can keep themselves safe and others.
Monash University Medical School Asbestos Awareness 2016
On the 12th of April the ACV/GARDS team and Dr John Scarlett, medical oncologist engaged 1st year medical students at Monash University Gippsland campus in a session on asbestos awareness. The aim of the ACV/GARDS group panel discussion was to enlighten the students to the medical, social, emotional and environmental issues around asbestos, talking about the disease and how it affects the sufferer and the family.
Highlighting the social impact this has on the family and the community, along with the emotional issues that come with a diagnosis of eg. mesothelioma, asbestos related lung cancer, asbestosis. How this is still impacting on communities today with exposure still happening, imports containing asbestos coming into Australia in crayons, building products, household products, flooring, panelling, brakes, gaskets and much more.
The ACV/GARDS panel was able to have one on one with the students and the panel was able to talk about their medical journeys and the medical system and how this affected their lives and well being. Dr John Scarlett spoke about the medico side and treatments and what drugs are available.
The students asked many thought provoking questions. It was a highly charged session with confronting issues faced by not just the panel but the students too.
ACV/GARDS panel were honoured and privileged to be able to have this talk with the students. To finish off a very intense morning the students and the panel had an enjoyable morning tea after the session where more questions were asked by the students over a cuppa and sandwich.

Project Klic is funded by the Bryn Hendry Foundation, a grass root’s charity which raises money to build schools in poverty stricken regions around the world. The foundation was initiated by the family of Bryn Hendry; who at just 16 years of age made the tragic decision to end his life. In honour of Bryn’s memory, his family now aim to build 16 schools, one for each year of Bryn’s life. A large scope of work was carried out by the 8 volunteers over 10 days to help improve the Primary School. Whilst in Cambodia, Davin assisted with a range of tasks including; painting, building a hut for the caretaker and her 3 children, dismantle the old teachers hut, using recycled material and relocated the chicken house and fencing.
